Around the House

Come November, we will have lived on the hilltop two years, and I still have so much to do, mainly because I decorate in the turtle style.

The unusual shape of the living room (and adjoining sun room) has left me flummoxed. I change the pillows and throws seasonally, and sometimes I move small pieces of furniture and art. Last fall, I put a gateleg table in the space and used it as a little dining area. I liked that. But after Christmas, I moved the gateleg to the foyer, and the old green farm table ended up in the sunroom.

I have probably worked harder on the sun room than any other space. A rug would help, and draperies would soften the hard lines. I keep folding down pages in catalogs. And when I go to HomeGoods, I always pass through the drapery aisle. So far, I haven't found what I'm looking for--maybe something neutral and solid...or maybe a pattern (with blues).

Last week, I decided to do a little shifting and moving in the sun room. What about a little sitting area? A loveseat had been outside all year, and I dusted off cobwebs, leaves, and spiders and brought it inside. The farm table was moved behind the sofa.

I kept moving. My husband and son couldn't find me, and when I finally appeared, they looked horrified. "You haven't been decorating, have you?"
Guilty on all counts.
I have a small sisal that may work in here. I sure don't want to buy a rug until I figure out the best way to configure this space.

A few years ago, I painted OVER a sort of ugly painting that I'd gotten at a roadside sale.
I much prefer the sea to the piano, dusty palms, and froo-froo. The frame is wonderful.

I've kept the kitchen very calm and pared down this summer.

With 100 degree days, I rather liked the ambient white with black touches. Keeping up with a puppy means I'm keeping the house streamlined--and vacuumed. He eats everything he finds: leaves, dried grass, any speck on the floor.

A sweet friend sent presents to my puppy. I felt happy and honored to hang the Scottie apron on the rack.

It's monogrammed--what a lovely, personal touch.

My friend also sent Scottie tea towels.

Another dear friend sent Jasper some goodies, too, including this adorable tea towel.

Hope you enjoyed the little visit.

  1. How precious is Jasper! What a cutie pie. I like that you live with a space for a while before deciding what exactly you want to do in decorating.

    1. Jasper had the zoomies the other day, and I thought to myself, this house is finally a home.

  2. I love the coziness of your sunroom and a rug would seal the deal. Bravo! I am a Scotty mom of two little guys. Our youngest just turned a year old last week. They are the best! Thank you for your blog. Love it!

    1. They really are the best! This morning, I asked Jasper if he wanted to go for a walk, and he yawned and made a little noise that sounded just like a "no!" I had forgotten how Scotties talk to their humans. So endearing.🐾🐾🐾🐾🐶

  4. Your home is truly beautiful, Michael Lee! Love your painting of the sea too. And Jasper, well, he is just plain ADORABLE!
I have a mini. Schnauzer who looks similar and also eats everything (still, at age 4 1/2 yrs.) I can't let her out in the yard; have to accompany her on a leash. oh well...

    1. Thank you, Beth. I do the same with Jasper--and even with a leash, I worry because his velcro harness came loose once, and he ran like the wind. So did I. :-)

  5. Such a cute doggy! Has it really been that long since you moved in? Seems like it was just months ago.

    1. It does seem longer, for sure. The house really didn't feel like home until Jasper. He said his first "word" today--a vocal yawn that sounded like "NO!" LOL

  6. Jasper is so cute. So glad that you got another dog.
Love the sunroom and I like the way it is now. Good luck finding drapes. Sometimes you will find them quickly and other times you will search and search before you find them.

Hope your weather turns cooler for you. We have had a very hot long summer also.
Will be so glad when fall comes along.

  8. I think you approach decorating like a gardener. You know how we are, we just have to keep playing, moving things around, trying things out. Why? Gardens are always changing. So are we. And sometimes, so are our homes. Some rooms are like annuals, bright, showy, seasonal, and others rooms are like perennials, old friends. Here's to both!

Your home looks wonderful. You are a good "house whisperer".

    1. Yolie, I was hoping you'd stop by. Your gardening analogy is apt and beautiful--most gardeners are always planting, then digging up and moving the plant.

  9. I'm sorry, was there anything else in this post besides a handsome little puppy?? Oh my gosh, I bet you just want to squeeze him or cuddle him all the time! I love your comment, "he got the zoomies". I think that's what we used to call the "dead run"? Too cute. That picture of him lying over the vent and his little tail all perky, with that furry toy nearby - cuteness overload.
Oh yes, your open spaces are fabulous! Those floors are ripe for a puppy scampering across. :) I've said before how great the kitchen is, but the towels and apron are perfect in there now.

    1. Jasper has brought the house to life. He said his first word today -- "NO!" Well, it sounded like a 'no,' a vocal yawn when I asked him if he wanted to take a walk. :-)

  11. Loved the tour of your house. Looks great to me! I think "decorating" a house, if that's what it is, is never done. I like to think of it as adding layers through time. I'm forever moving things around, rotating things in and out of a cabinet or closet, or even editing out if I no longer love it. It's an ongoing process here. ;-)
Jasper couldn't be any cuter. I want to pull him right off my screen and cuddle that ball of black fur. I know it's fun to see him in action.
I didn't think about it, but seeing the towels on your stove, the red and black are perfect in your kitchen.
Our 100 degree weather dropped to the 80s today. Hope the cool air stalls here for days, and perhaps it will move on east to cool TN down.
    Happy Wednesday!

  13. Ok, I'm hoping third time is the charm, my laptop or blogspot is cranky and I keep losing my comment. I adore your monogrammed apron, perfect for you! I've been waiting for Jasper's debut here. Gracie (now 12) still hoovers everything up off the floor like a pig on a truffle hunt, no vaccuum required. I love seeing your decorating bits and pieces and your sisal rug sounds perfect until you decide what you want to do. Slow and steady wins the race. ♥

    1. LOL "pig on a truffle hunt." I think she and Jasper must be related. I can say one thing: my house has never been cleaner. Between me and Tyler, we are constantly Swiffering and Hoovering. I have tried not to stuff this house to the rafters. I'm just like a squirrel gathering nuts.

  14. Yes indeed, I so enjoyed the visit around the house from the peek of the painting you did to your carefully orchestrated furniture arrangements that you change without hesitation when you have another creative idea. My son's dogs used to hover over the A/C vents in the floor too...they were the best...we miss them. Jasper is the cutest!

  18. I can't believe it's been two years!! When I look through the blues and whites into the sun room, I imagined a soft pale butter yellow drapes on the windows. I love blue, white, and yellow.
